Why did I want to create it?
This has been a process that I've been thinking about for a while, but I've had a number of people ask me why I wanted to create a podcast. The best way that I can briefly convey why I felt that I should go down that road is because I could feel that I needed to. This is not something that I'm doing to gain a following, or to try and become internet famous, it's simply something for me to do that I enjoy. I have so many things that I love to do, but I want to be able to look back and have something tangible to show what I've done. That is also one of the reasons that I've created this website and this blog.
What was my influence?
I've been listening to a couple of podcasts during my free time, and they both played a part in making the final decision to start one of my own.
LADIES AND TANGENTS
This is the main podcast that I've been listening to, as they have been around for much longer than the next example. These two ladies spend each episode with a general theme, but tangent so much that you start to forget what they were originally talking about. This just about sums up who I am in real life, so it was the basis for my idea with building and starting Dual Tangents. When I listen to them, I laugh and react as if I was in the same room as them, and I start to forget that they are just voices coming through my speakers or headphones. They create a space that allows me to briefly forget everything that might be stressing me out, or anxieties I might have, even if just for an hour. This is a space that I hope to one day create for someone, even if that is only one person.
VIOLATING COMMUNITY GUIDELINES
This podcast has not been around as long as L&T, but I've been following the hosts for longer. Brittany Broski took the internet by storm with her reaction to tasting kombucha, and it all sped forward from there. As the queen ally to the lgbtq+ community, crowned by myself, she has gained quite the following. She and her cousin Sarah host the VCG podcast, and have 11 episodes as of the date when I wrote this. They tend to stick to their topics a little stronger than L&T and Dual Tangents do, but they still love to break off and say something random every now and then. Just like with L&T, I find myself laughing along with them. More than once, I have paused the episode to look something up, like a quiz or chart, so I could follow along with them. I find myself taking in every word of what they say, rather than zoning out and losing an hour of my time.
Who is my co-host?
I had asked around to a number of people to see if someone would like to co-host with me, but it never felt like I found the right person. I found a number of people that are going to come on as guests, but none of them felt like "the" person to be a co-host. Our energies matched and we have good conversations, but we just don't click on the level that I was looking for. While at work one morning, I was talking with my co-worker and friend of several years about some random stuff like we always do. We were bouncing back and forth, laughing and telling stories, and I heard a voice in my head say "this is the future of your podcast," and I knew that I had to ask her to be my co-host. There was absolutely no hesitation in her yes, it was almost instantaneous. I did not have second thoughts, and I did not have any fear that she was jumping in without any thought. I could hear in her confidence that she had already given this sort of idea some thought, and was ready to commit to this process with me. Later, she would share with me that she had also toyed with the idea of starting a podcast, but none of the people she had approached were ready to commit to making this a long term process. She told me that she trusted me to really commit the proper time to this, and that she knew I wouldn't just flake out after a few weeks. We are both on the same page with making this a long term project, with no set end date.
What Is Dual Tangents?
I always knew that I wanted this podcast to be a sort of conglomeration of all sorts of topics, but there was still the matter of what our "theme" would be, or the main idea behind the podcast as a whole, not just each individual episode. We quickly decided to include the word "tangent" in some form, because that generally sums up who we are and what the podcast will be overall. There were several ideas floating around in our heads, such as "Tangent Incorporated" or "Totally Tangent" but we ended up going with Dual Tangents. There are two of us, and we go back and forth, so it just felt right.
